Computer Does Not Recognize ACSM Files

Last Updated: Nov 08, 2016 06:01PM EST
Symptoms
I downloaded my eBooks as an ".acsm" file, but when I try to open it my computer does not recognize the file type, even though I have Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader installed.

When opening my eBook I get one of the following error messages:
Adobe Reader says “Adobe Reader could not open 'URLLink.acsm' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged(for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).”

Bluefire Reader says “The selected file is not an ePUB or PDF file.”

Cause
Your computer has not yet associated ".acsm" files with Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader.

Resolution (for both Bluefire Reader and ADE)
WINDOWS:
  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader and in the menu bar, go to File->Add to Library.
  2. In the bottom right hand corner, change Ebooks (*.epub,*.pdf) to Adobe Content Server Message(*.acsm).
  3. Navigate to the location where you downloaded the 'URLLink.acsm' file and double click on 'URLLink.acsm'.
MAC:
  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader and in the menu bar, go to File->Add to Library.
  2. In the bottom, change Show: 'PDF/EPUB files' to 'ACSM files'.
  3. Navigate to the location where you downloaded the 'URLLink.acsm' file and double click on 'URLLink.acsm'.
